Reference Publication Year Spectroscopy (RPYS) and Multi-RPYS are quantitative methods for identifying the historical origins of research fields and topics. RPYS creates a temporal profile of cited references for a set of papers that emphasizes years where relatively significant findings were published. Multi-RPYS creates an RPYS temporal profile for each publication year of the citing set of papers and visualizes them to see how the influence of references has changed over time.
